Circumcision FAQ
01
Circumcision is performed differently, depending on the age of the male. The procedure, however, is similar, no matter when it's performed. The foreskin is disconnected from the head of the penis and the excess skin is removed. Once the tissue has been removed, sutures will be used to carefully seal the incision site.
In newborns, the procedure is performed soon after birth and takes less than 10 minutes. In older males, the procedure may take up to an hour to perform and general anesthesia or sedation is usually used.
02
Most men are able to return to work after a week, once pain and swelling have subsided.
You should avoid strenuous activities and any type of sexual activity until Dr. Liang says you're well enough to undertake those activities. After the procedure (and for a few days) you may have swelling, bruising and discomfort which can be treated with application of ice packs and pain medication. You can shower once the bandage is removed.
03
There are a number of potential advantages associated with circumcision.
Circumcision reduces the risk of developing a urinary tract infection (UTI), the risk of getting some types of sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV, and the risk of developing penile cancer.
04
Some older men report a difference in sensations following circumcision, but studies have found circumcision, in most cases, does not negatively affect a man’s sexual function or satisfaction.
